The third eye opens: L’éveil (The Awakening) embodies a consciousness expanding towards a wider reality. First panel of La quête de spiritualité.
Like all of Modka’s portraits on a gold ground, the work draws on Byzantine art, which the artist studied in art history at the Sorbonne: gold becomes sacred light, and blue the presence of the soul.
